What it actually is
Dali Old Town (大理古城) was the capital of the Nanzhao Kingdom (738–937) and later Dali Kingdom — a Bai-minority polity that ruled most of southwest China before Yuan integration. The current walled town dates to 1382 (Ming dynasty); much of the gridded street plan and Bai-style courtyard architecture survives. The town sits at 1,975m elevation between two giants: the snow-capped Cangshan range (4,122m) to the west and Erhai Lake (250 km²) to the east. Most travelers anchor in the old town and day-trip outward — Erhai by motorbike or electric scooter, Cangshan by cable car, the Bai-village ring around the lake by foot.
Why it’s worth going
Dali is China's most successful slow-travel destination — a real walled town with intact courtyard architecture, a thriving Bai-language street culture, and infrastructure (cafés, bookstores, vegan kitchens) built around month-long stays rather than weekend visits. The Erhai loop is one of the great half-day rides in China: ¥50 for a scooter, three hours of lake-edge road, villages where time runs differently. Cangshan delivers four seasons in one day — flowers at the base, ice fields at the summit. And the surrounding Bai villages (Xizhou, Zhoucheng, Shuanglang) preserve old textile traditions, tea customs, and architectural details you won't see in commercialized destinations.
What not to miss
Erhai loop by scooter
Rent at Caicun pier or near the South Gate. The 120 km lake loop is too long for one day; the eastern half (Caicun → Shuanglang → Wase) makes the best 3-hour ride with the clearest lake views. Bring sun protection — the high-altitude sun burns fast.
Cangshan cable car + four seasons
Three cable lines run up Cangshan. The Ximatan (洗马潭) line is the only one reaching the summit ridge — flowers at base, alpine meadow midway, ice at top. Pack a down jacket; renting at the top costs ¥80, bringing your own is ¥0.
Three Pagodas (Chongsheng Temple)
Three Tang-dynasty stone pagodas built between 824 and 859, miraculously surviving 30+ earthquakes. The reflecting pool view (north side) is one of Yunnan's signature photographs.
Foreigner Street (Yangren Jie)
The original 1990s backpacker drag — Bad Monkey Brewery, Salvador's Coffee, vegan kitchens. More commercial now but still where Dali's slow-traveler community drinks coffee at 11am on a Tuesday.
Bai village ring
Xizhou (喜洲) north, Zhoucheng tie-dye village, Shuanglang on the lake's east shore, Wase fishing town. A day driving the western Erhai shore visits four villages in a way the eastern shore can't match.
Tips from locals
- • 1,975m elevation is enough to feel mild altitude on day one — drink extra water and take Cangshan slow
- • High-altitude UV is brutal — hat, sunglasses, SPF 50 even on cloudy days
- • Layered clothing essential — old town can be 25°C while Cangshan summit is below freezing
- • Inspect rental scooters carefully and negotiate — quoted prices are negotiable down 20–30%
- • Local Bai food to try: ruyangfan rice cakes, raw fish (sushi-style) at Shuanglang, three-course tea ceremony (sweet/bitter/aftertaste)
