What it actually is
Dayan, the walled heart of Lijiang Old Town in northwest Yunnan, has been a market town since the 12th-13th century and was the seat of the Mu family chieftains for centuries. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, it covers a dense grid of red cobble lanes, spring-fed canals, and several thousand grey-tile courtyard houses set on the slope below Lion Hill, with Jade Dragon Snow Mountain on the northern horizon. The old town is car-free, and the cobble, canal, and timber-facade townscape is still actively maintained. A relaxed half-day walk stitches together Mufu Palace (the rebuilt chieftain's mansion), the Sifangjie marketplace, the Wangu Tower atop Lion Hill, and the spring-fed Black Dragon Pool just to the north. Staying one night inside Dayan lets you walk the lanes at dawn, before the day-trippers arrive.
Why it’s worth going
Dayan is a working town rather than a museum, so the rhythm of cobble, canal, and tiled roofline is still lived rather than performed. In a single half-day you can take in a UNESCO World Heritage old town, the Mu family residence, the Sifangjie marketplace, and one of China's most reliable snow-mountain backdrops. Free, unscripted Naxi music sessions still play in the square in the evenings, and bargain wild-mushroom hot pot waits two streets back from the tourist frontage. It pairs naturally with Dali to the south and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain to the north.
What not to miss
Carved-stone lane network
Wander Dayan's cobbled lanes of red flagstone, where alleys cross at will with no grid and no walls. The paths descend with the canals and split around tiny stone bridges, so every turn reveals a new roofline or a canal-side washing stone.
Sifangjie Square
The 'four-direction' marketplace at the old town's heart still hosts unscripted Naxi guqin and Dongjing music sessions. Drop in after dark when the day crowds thin and locals tune up around the old well.
Mufu Palace
The rebuilt mansion of the Mu family chieftains rises against Lion Hill with carved gates and tribute halls. Climb the rear terrace for a single-frame view of grey-tile rooftops with Jade Dragon Snow Mountain behind.
Black Dragon Pool
A spring-fed pool just north of Dayan that frames Jade Dragon Snow Mountain perfectly on a clear morning, with a weathered marble arch and pavilion mirrored in the still water.
Wild-mushroom hot pot
The dish to try in Lijiang, simmered at the table in a clay pot of chicken or cured-ham broth. Skip the tourist frontage on the main square and look two streets back, where the same dish costs far less.
