What it actually is

A 3-day immersive route through Chongzuo, featuring Asia's largest transnational waterfall at Detian, the stunning Tongling Grand Canyon with its 188-m waterfall and underground river, and the serene Mingshi Rural Landscape. UNESCO-listed Huashan Rock Art along the Zuojiang River adds a cultural crown jewel.

Why it’s worth going

Chongzuo remains one of Guangxi's best-kept travel secrets — fewer crowds than Guilin, dramatic karst scenery, Asia's largest transnational waterfall, and a rich blend of Zhuang culture and Sino-Vietnamese border heritage. The Henai Highway itself is a 'landscape gallery on wheels,' making the drive between stops an essential part of the experience.

Classic Chongzuo 3-Day Immersive Tour

Starting from Nanning, this 3-day route traverses the Henai Highway to reach Detian Transnational Waterfall, Tongling Grand Canyon, Mingshi Rural Landscape, and Huashan Rock Art — blending natural wonders with cultural heritage in one of China's most scenic and uncrowded regions.

Editor’s picks

Detian Transnational Waterfall

Straddling the China-Vietnam border, Detian is the largest transnational waterfall in Asia. In peak season (May–October), a bamboo raft ride (80 CNY) brings you within meters of the thundering water. The best viewing window is 12:00–14:00 when Vietnam releases upstream water.

Tongling Grand Canyon

A karst canyon featuring a single-drop 188-meter waterfall that pours from a cave mouth. The underground river creates a misty microclimate at 18°C even in summer. Two unmissable stops: the Water Curtain Cave and the Mandarin Duck Pond.

Mingshi Rural Landscape

A free-entry karst farmland area compared to Yangshuo but quieter. Rent a 'bagache' motorbike (30 CNY/hr) to follow the village loop. Highlights include the 'Kiss of the Heaven' cliff formation, Fish Scale Dam, and the film base where 'Hua Qiangu' was shot.

Huashan Rock Art

A UNESCO World Heritage site featuring ancient paintings on 100-meter-high limestone cliffs above the Zuojiang River. The red ochre figures — humans, animals, and drums — are estimated to be 2,000 years old. Viewing is done by boat, giving a unique angled perspective of the paintings.

Tips from locals

  • Self-drive is essential — attractions are spread across 100+ km
  • Bring a light rain jacket; mist is constant near waterfalls
  • Try Vietnamese spring rolls, sour congee, and Chongzuo chicken rice noodles
  • Slippery paths in the canyon — wear anti-slip footwear
