What it actually is
Wuzhen is one of the most celebrated of the Jiangnan water towns, set on the Grand Canal in Tongxiang, Zhejiang, about 80 km southwest of Shanghai. Its historic core is divided into scenic zones: Xizha (West Gate), the larger restored area built around Ming-Qing houses and canal lanes; Dongzha (East Gate), the original settlement with the novelist Mao Dun's former residence and folk museums; plus quieter quarters to the south and north. Stone lanes, white-walled timber houses with dark tiled roofs, and lantern-lit canals preserve a working waterside ecosystem layered with 1,300 years of merchant heritage. Each autumn the Wuzhen Theatre Festival takes over its warehouses and riverboats, and the town has also hosted the annual World Internet Conference. The town rewards an overnight stay: rise early for the misty water market, and linger after dusk for empty, lantern-lit canals.
Why it’s worth going
Wuzhen blends a living canal ecosystem, centuries of layered architecture, and a contemporary cultural program more seamlessly than almost anywhere else in the Jiangnan region. Stay overnight and you trade the daytime tour-bus crowds for lantern-lit quiet; rise early and you share the water market with locals. Glide under arched stone bridges on a wooden rowing boat past indigo-dyeing workshops and aged teahouses, and the poetic 'old China' of the postcards becomes real. It is an easy high-speed-rail trip from Shanghai or Hangzhou.
What not to miss
Lantern-lit Xizha night canals
Xizha (West Gate) glows after dusk: red lanterns hang over still water, arched stone bridges reflect, and rowing boats drift past indigo-dyed cloth hanging to dry. The scene feels lifted from a classical painting, especially when winter mist diffuses the lights.
Ming-Qing architecture, layer by layer
Timber-frame houses line the canals — white-washed walls, dark-tiled roofs, and carved wooden windows over the water. Many now house craft studios, so the old buildings stay lived-in.
Wooden rowing-boat canal cruise
A ride in a flat-bottomed wooden boat poled by an oarsman through the West Gate waterways, passing under stone bridges and indigo workshops. Boats leave from the Xizha dock inside the scenic zone.
Dawn at the water market
Arrive early at the Xizha water market for local breakfast and soft, misty light over the canal — the one time of day locals outnumber visitors.
Indigo-dyeing workshop
Watch traditional blue-print fabric lifted, dripping, from the dye vats at a workshop inside Xizha — a living craft passed down over generations.

- • Stay inside Xizha — your ticket doubles as re-entry, and the early-morning canal is empty of tour groups

- • Try local Jiangnan snacks at the water-market stalls — crispy fried cakes and fresh soy milk at dawn
- • Weekends and the National Day holiday are intensely crowded — visit midweek and linger past the day-trip exodus
